At this time of year, thoughts turn to Christmas, mulled wine, mistletoe – and winter sports! And there’s no better place to enjoy the latter than the incredibly scenic French Alps…
Arc 1950 – the King of Alpine ski resorts
Les Arcs, France is an excellent place to experience Alpine skiing at its best. For a start, it’s part of the famous Paradiski ski area, the second-largest ski area on the face of the earth, with only les Trois Vallées boasting a more extensive network of runs. In total, Les Arcs connects to some 264 miles of pistes, ranging from beginner through to intermediate and expert runs. Variety is key to the appeal of Les Arcs and the area offers just that. A highly-efficient system of ski lifts whisks you up to a dizzying 3250 metres above sea level and there’s plenty of chances to explore off-piste too. Les Arcs is composed of a number of different villages, with Arc 1950 being the most recent. This ski area has a reputation for top-quality accommodation and facilities, which has been further cemented by the construction of the five-star Arc 1950 resort. In contrast to many resorts, the hotel and apartment designs have been much inspired by the local architectural style, creating a more ‘intimate’ feel. There’s also an excellent selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and even a spa, not to mention activities and special events throughout the year. Naturally, the resort is entirely pedestrianized (ski-in, ski-out).
Ski to your heart’s content at Les Arcs
Skiing and other winter sports are the focus of most people’s holidays in Les Arcs, and rightly so! It’s not just that there’s acres of space and hundreds of kilometres of runs – it’s all the extras thrown in as well. There are glaciers to ski on, snowparks, a half-pipe, tobogganing runs, opportunities for speed skiing and heliskiing too! If you like to take things a little easier, there’s nothing stopping you from trying out the 153 kilometres’ worth of cross-country trails. There’s even a trail that’s specially designed for children, which is dedicated to discovering the animals, birds and plants that inhabit this beautiful place. What’s more, the resort is constantly updating its ski facilities to make the Les Arcs experience more fun and more comfortable. For instance, chairlifts are being improved to deliver faster journey times, meaning more time on the slopes for you!
